OpenAI releases Point-E, an AI that generates 3D models

well well wellā€¦ well, OpenAI is like Steph Curry they canā€™t stop shooting 3 pointers or should I say 3D point Eā€™s!

OpenAI just released a new AI, that generates freaking 3D Models. Essentially, Point-E is a machine learning system that can generate 3D models in 1 to 2 minutes on a single Nvidia V100 GPU.

donā€™t wanna bore you on how it works buuuuuuttttttā€¦ Point-E doesnā€™t create 3D objects in the traditional sense. Rather, it generates point clouds or discrete sets of data points in space that represent a 3D shape. So like instead of the typical way 3D images are generated which takes a ton of time to render, Point E does it a lot more E-fficiently (The ā€œEā€ in Point-E is short for ā€œefficiency,ā€ because itā€™s seemingly faster than the previous 3D object generation approaches.)

So instead of rendering, point E creates point clouds that are easier to synthesize for computers, the limitation to this is they donā€™t capture the true 3D essence of whatever is generated.

To get around this limitation, the Point-E team trained an additional AI system to convert Point-Eā€™s point clouds to meshes. (Meshes ā€” the collections of vertices, edges, and faces that define an object ā€” are commonly used in 3D modeling and design.) But they note in the paper that the model can sometimes miss certain parts of objects, resulting in blocky or distorted shapes.

NASA develops AI-powered Google Maps for the Moon

robot-assisted astronauts?? I think I've watched a cartoon about that

NASA is teaching an AI to use features of the lunar landscape to help future missions navigate across the Moon.

Kinda like Google maps but for the moon

The AI will compare views of the lunar surface with pre-existing topographic models of the Moon in order to pinpoint the userā€™s location down to within 30 feet. The system will act as a backup for when alternative navigation methods that depend on maintaining communications links are not viable.

The new system is not expected to be astronautsā€™ main source of assistance but instead acts as a backup for when alternative navigation methods that depend on maintaining communications links are not viable.

yooow elon we need google maps for Mars ASAP

AI assistants help developers produce buggy code

well finally I have something in common with AI, I produce buggy code, it does too!! We are like brothers now

Computer scientists from Stanford University have found that programmers who accept help from AI tools like GitHub Copilot produce less secure code than those who fly solo.

In a paper titled, "Do Users Write More Insecure Code with AI Assistants?", Stanford boffins Neil Perry, Megha Srivastava, Deepak Kumar, and Dan Boneh answer this question.

Worse still, they found that AI help tends to delude developers about the quality of their output.

"We found that participants with access to an AI assistant often produced more security vulnerabilities than those without access, with particularly significant results for string encryption and SQL injection," the authors state in their paper. "Surprisingly, we also found that participants provided access to an AI assistant were more likely to believe that they wrote secure code than those without access to the AI assistant.ā€

The Stanford user study involved 47 people with varying levels of experience, including undergraduate students, graduate students, and industry professionals. Participants were asked to write code in response to five prompts while being monitored.

By the end of the study, the authors concluded that AI assistants should be viewed with caution because they can mislead inexperienced developers and create security vulnerabilities. But they also hoped this study will force the developers of these AIs to work on the coding abilities of their systems before deploying.

As one study participant is said to have remarked about AI assistance, "I hope this gets deployed. Itā€™s like StackOverflow but better because it never tells you that your question was dumb."

Comedy gold right there!

BONUS NEWS

who gets a treat???? you get a treat!!

Normally we share 3 new stories and we are done for the day but something crazy happened in the UK, Luke Evans, the MP for Bosworth, told the Commons: ā€˜I think this may be a firstā€™ as he shared a speech created by ChatGPT.

WTFFF?????

btw just watch mainstream media try to make chatGPT political or claim the devs support one end of the stick, lol

Luke read the ChatGPT elegantly and when he was done, He finished his speech with an AI-generated rhyming Christmas poem about the Houses of Parliament, including a mention of the Speaker.

Mr. Brennan (another member of the parliament) later said a large chunk of his speech was also written using an AI program.

at this point, I donā€™t even know what's real, Lmao!

Did you know that:

41% of consumers believe artificial intelligence will improve their lives in some way.

(Source: Strategy Analytics)

Thereā€™s no denying that artificial intelligence has also dominated the technological landscape. With that said, consumers in India and China are more likely to embrace this technology
